Alipore Jail Museum

Kolkata is all decked up with it's new addition in the visiting list. The forthcoming winter season is definitely going to be better than other with the historical Alipore Central Jail Museum.

Kolkata’s Alipore Jail, which has now been converted into a museum. Not only does it house 116-year-old records, but it was also where revolutionaries like Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bidhan Chandra Roy and Rishi Aurobindo spent nights as inmates during the British rule. To commemorate them and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters who devoted their life to the nation, the centrally-located historical landmark was opened to the public in September 2022.

Timing – 12pm to 6pm (Monday Closed)

Ticket Price – 30 Rupees per person

Light show Time – 6.30 pm – 7.30

This is the main entrance of Alipore Jail , Kolkata. The Alipore Jail or Alipore Central Jail is a prison in Alipore, Kolkata, where political prisoners were kept under British rule, among them Subhas Bose , JL Nehru, Bidhan Ch. Roy, Rishi Aurobindo etc were kept here. It also housed the Alipore Jail Press. It was opened in 1906 , nearly 116 years ago.

Jawaharlal Nehru was arrested and kept in this cell. He was arrested in 1934 and was released after nearly 3 months of his imprisonment.

This is the cell of Dinesh Gupta who was one of the accused of Writers' Building attack. On 8 December 1930, Badal along with Dinesh Gupta and Benoy, dressed in European costume, entered the Writers' Building and shot dead Simpson. Police in the building started firing at them in response. What ensued was a brief gunfight between the three young revolutionaries and the police.

There are six cells on the first floor of this building. This is just in front of the gallows. Only these 6 cells had windows so that prisoners could see the hanging with their own eyes and gave up the freedom struggle in fear. But at the time of hanging they were not afraid and they constantly chanted Vande Mataram.
